Services for Distance Students

What is a Distance Student?

A student living outside of the Kansas City Metro area, either in Missouri or another state.

The Kansas City Metro area is defined as: Platte, Clay, Ray, Jackson, and Cass counties in Missouri; Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Johnson, and Miami counties in Kansas.

Students with disabilities may be eligible for some of these services. Please work though the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

How can the library help Distance Students?

UMKC, MERLIN, MOBIUS items:

You have access to UMKC electronic resources. Request article/chapter scans from print materials owned and available at UMKC Libraries through ILL@UMKC.

If you are in Missouri, outside the KC area: Choose the closest MERLIN/MOBIUS pick-up location.

If you are outside Missouri and the KC area: Work with ILL services and collections at local libraries whenever possible; if needed, books can be mailed directly to students in the U.S., with students responsible for adhering to due dates and for return postage.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) items:

Request article/chapter scans from other libraries through ILL@UMKC and they will be delivered to you electronically.

If you are in Missouri, outside the KC area: Work with ILL services and collections at local libraries whenever possible for non-MERLIN/MOBIUS items; if needed, books not available in MERLIN/MOBIUS can be mailed directly to students, with students responsible for adhering to due dates and for return postage.

If you are outside Missouri and the KC area: Work with ILL services and collections at local libraries whenever possible; if needed, books can be mailed directly to students in the U.S., with students responsible for adhering to due dates and for return postage.
