Scanning and Printing

Free scanners are available in all library locations, and provide a quick and green solution.  Capture digital images of research and study materials, then either email them to yourself or save them on a portable flash drive. Still need to see a hardcopy? No problem. Just log in to a library computer and send the scanned image to a nearby printer.  For more information and help, visit our printing and scanning guide.

Reference

A reference librarian is normally on duty at the Reference desk from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. If Reference is not staffed, address questions to Circulation staff or email: Dental Reference.

The Dental Reference Service of the UMKC School of Dentistry Library is available to alumni and dental health practitioners in Missouri and Kansas. For information, please call (816) 235-2030, fax (816) 235-6540. For a list of selected dental Internet links, please click here.

Computer Literature Searching

The Dental Library has available patron access to a wide variety of databases in such fields as psychology, education, business and nursing as well as those offered by the National Library of Medicine. Mediated searches are available to faculty and students of the UMKC School of Dentistry at no cost. Searches for other patrons may be provided for a fee.

Remote Access to Databases

For more information about accessing UMKC databases from off-campus or from home, please visit the Health Sciences Library Remote Access Page.

Interlibrary Loan

The Dental Library will attempt to obtain from other libraries any materials not available at this site. This service is provided for primary clientele (UMKC students and faculty and persons affiliated with the School of Dentistry). Other patrons should check with the library at their own institution for interlibrary loans first. Public libraries will process interlibrary loans for unaffiliated persons. Response time will vary depending on the item requested.

If you would like to request your Interlibrary Loans on-line, please use our electronic Interlibrary Loan form.

Library Instruction Program

A variety of classes are offered on subjects such as searching MEDLINE and finding dental resources. Individual instruction can be arranged by emailing or calling Marie Thompson, Dental Librarian, at (816) 235-2030, or stopping by the library.

Local Library Link

A list of local libraries and their on-line catalogs is available by clicking here.

Instructional Resources Library/Computer Center

The Instructional Resources Library/Computer Center is located immediately adjacent to the Library. The IRL includes video tapes, slides and patient education materials. For school presentations, contact the IRL in advance to reserve necessary materials.  For more information about the policies for checking out patient education materials, visit the Dental Instructional Resources Library LibGuide.

The Computer Center is split between the IRL and the main Reading Room of the Dental Library. There are a total of 47 personal computer workstations, four laser printers, one deskjet printer, and one flatbed scanner. Only specific programs are available for use by authorized UMKC students, faculty and staff. Check for compatibility if you are using nonstandard programs to work on a specific project. Patrons are encouraged to use a flash drive to save their long term projects.

All computers may be used to access UMKC email accounts and the Internet. Since the Computer Center is open to students, faculty and staff, it is recommended that users exercise discretion in terms of websites accessed.

The computers in the IRL can be reserved for classes or training sessions. Projection screens and equipment are available for use in the IRL during these reserved times.  To schedule a reservation for all or part of the lab, contact Darnell Williams (Library Information Specialist II).

Study Room

A study room is available inside the Instructional Resources Library/Computer Center.  This room seats up to 5 people comfortably and includes a computer workstation with access to one of the laser printers.  The study room is available on a first come, first served basis.  The room can also be reserved by students, faculty or staff for up to 3 hours at a time.  Reservations must be made at least one (1) hour in advance of use.  To schedule a reservation, contact Darnell Williams (Library Information Specialist II).  Unless prior arrangements have been made, reservations that are not claimed within fifteen (15) minutes of the start time will be automatically cancelled.
