When complete, the Miller Nichols Library and Interactive Learning Center will enable
UMKC to accommodate a 20
percent increase in enrollment with approximately 170,000 renovated square feet and 65,000 new square feet of
classroom and learning space. The complex will provide space for critical student services, research, and sustained
growth of the

Library Acquires 22 New Databases and E-Resources
As the information needs of
UMKC students and faculty continue to increase, the electronic resources of the University Libraries continue to grow. Over the past summer the Libraries have added 22 new databases, electronic collections that provide access to online information, including reference sources, primary sources and full text articles in more than 1600 journals, magazines, and newspapers. The Libraries’ website now provides a total of more than 200 online databases, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to
UMKC faculty, students and staff. The new resources cover a variety of subject areas, including ethnic studies, literature, art, educational testing, history, medicine, political science, economics, law, psychiatry, theatre, and business. Additionally, two of the Libraries’ databases, the
Gale Virtual Reference Library and
Oxford Reference Online Premium, include more than 400 electronic encyclopedias, dictionaries and handbooks on many different subjects.
New resources were selected for the Libraries collections by Subject Specialist Librarians, based on student and faculty requests, with the goal of empowering students and faculty to discover information and gain knowledge in their fields of study. According to Brenda Dingley, Assistant Director for Technical Services and Collections, “The Subject Specialists worked together to ensure that the Libraries acquired the resources that would be most useful and valuable to researchers over a wide range of subject areas. The Libraries received additional funding from the Office of the Provost, the Friends of the Library and
UMKC academic departments in order to make many of these purchases.” Most of the new sources include current articles, but articles from 1800 – 1899 are available in
19th Century U.S. Newspapers.
Art Museum Image Gallery has more than 155,000 images of art held in museums throughout the world.
Value Line Research Center provides financial data on corporations and industries.
Social Explorer includes maps of current and historical census data and maps. Specialized encyclopedias, generally written by experts in the field, are available in many subject areas.
Oxford Reference Online Premium has English-language and bilingual dictionaries, including a Visual English Dictionary.
All of these new online resources are available to
UMKC students, faculty and staff on campus and from anywhere with Internet access, using a
UMKC Single sign-on account. Links to the Libraries’ electronic resources are available at
http://library.umkc.edu/online/databasesmain.htm. Recently added online resources are highlighted by the word “New”.

Due to campus maintenance, the wheelchair ramp on the North side of Miller Nichols library will be closed from
May 14 through August 27, 2007.
There will be no wheelchair access to the North entrance (parking lot side) of the Library. Wheelchair access will only be available at the Library’s South entrance (on 51st Street).
