Computing in Miller Nichols Library

Information Commons The Information Commons, which is located on the first floor, has more than 48 scholars' workstations. This area offers computing capabilities in a work environment that is conducive to research and collaboration. Scanning is available at new KIC scanners across from the Service Desk, and printing is available from any Information Commons computer or via wifi. Second Floor Computer Lab The second floor student computer lab is one of many campus computer labs provided by UMKC Information Services. Access to the lab is restricted to students, staff, and faculty of UMKC. Printing is allowed from student accounts.

Universal Access Workstations

Two Universal Access Workstations available for patrons with disabilities. The workstations are located on the first floor on the East side (left from stairs or elevator). One station is in the Microform Room and the other at the far end of the computer workstation area. Equipment includes computers with screen reading and magnification software, scanners and braille embossers, a scanner reader, and two CCTV units.

MERLIN Library Catalog Computers

Computers with dedicated access to the MERLIN Library Catalog are located on the 3rd and 4th floors. Printing is not available from these computers.

Music/Media

Located on the ground floor, the Music/Media Library has eleven computers available for use. Scanning and printing are also available. Please see our printing and scanning guide for more assistance.

Wireless Internet

The UMKC University Libraries offers wireless connectivity for UMKC students, faculty, and staff. Wireless Internet access is available for UMKC-affiliated patrons on all five floors of the library.

In the Miller Nichols Library, the strongest connections will be found in the Information Commons on the first floor, the Music/Media area on the ground floor, the 2nd floor, and the lounge areas on 3rd, and 4th floors (the areas directly south of the entrance to the stairwells and the elevator hallway). Wireless connectivity may be available in other areas of the library, but can be weaker and less dependable.

Only UMKC students, faculty, and staff may use the wireless network and it is necessary to have activated a UMKC single sign on account. UMKC Information Services offers instructions for connecting to the wireless network and these are found at: http://r1.umkc.edu/wireless/.
