To Find Books | To Find Articles | Selected Journals | Other Research Options | LGBT Office Resources
This resource guide is intended to be a starting point for your research and investigation. It is not an exhaustive listing of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) materials to be found at any of the UMKC University Libraries or the LGBT Office. Research/Information consultation may be needed through either the Libraries or the LGBT Office.
More information may be found on a topic by consulting UMKC University Libraries subject guides that deal with another aspect of your topic. For example, in searching for information on same sex marriage, you may want to also look at the Sociology or Political Science Subject Guides. Also feel free to contact any of our librarians, 235-1534, or the staff at the LGBT Office, 235-1639, for further assistance.
To find resources relevant to your research use the MERLIN Library Catalog, for materials to be found at one of the UMKC libraries, and/or the MOBIUS Union Catalog, to find materials in the over sixty college libraries in Missouri. You can also investigate the New Titles in the Miller Nichols Library page. A lot of LGBT books will be in the HQ section of the collection.

Searching by Keyword (For Searching for Books)
When searching the MERLIN Library Catalog, the online catalog for searching for books in the University Libraries or within the University of Missouri system, using a Keyword search is a good place to start. Just enter the terms or phrase of what you are looking for. (Please do not use complete sentences, such as “What are the current laws on same-sex marriage?” Our catalog will probably not understand you. It will try to look for every word you type in. A search for “same-sex marriage” will give you a list that should be close to what you are looking for, while a search for “I am looking for a book about same-sex marriage” will give you a list much larger but much less focused.)
You may need to experiment with terms to get the correct ones to find the books you are looking for. Once you find books on what you are looking for, then you may want to use the subject headings found in those records to give you additional search terms or to help you narrow down your search.
Sample Subject Headings (Also for Searching for Books)
