Only 20 years ago, the primary focus of departments of physical education was the preparation of physical education teachers for the schools. Today, these departments support a multifaceted curriculum encompassing teacher education, exercise science, physical therapy, and sport administration (Husen & Postlethwaite, 1994, v. 8, p. 4465). The resources listed in this guide will help you to locate a variety of materials relevant to the study of physical education and exercise science, but you should remember to also consult materials relevant to whatever specific focus you are bringing to your study (e.g., if you are interested in physical education in the schools, you might consult resources listed both on this guide and on the Library Guide to Education).
Use the MERLIN Library Catalog and the MOBIUS Union Catalog to find resources relevant to your research. Relevant works can be found using subject headings (Library of Congress) such as:
Works relevant to the study of specific aspects of sport or exercise science, or to the study of physical education for discrete groups can also be found using subject headings such as:
Finally, works relevant to specific games, types of exercise, and types of physical therapy can be found using subject headings such as:
To find the location of a book in Miller Nichols Library, see the Location Guide.
Remote (off-campus) access to databases is available only to UMKC students, faculty, and staff. All other users must access online resources within the Libraries. Begin searching by selecting a database. After selection you will be prompted to provide a UMKC Single Sign-On user name and password OR a 9-digit UMKC ID number followed by the letter k (example: 0123456789k) and last name, as needed.
The database most likely to help you find articles relevant to your research depends on the particular aspect of physical education or exercise science in which you are interested. If you are interested primarily in education, teacher training, or sports in schools, you will want to use databases such as ERIC. If you are interested primarily in nutrition, physical therapy, or kinesiology, you will want to use databases such as MEDLINE. If you are interested in the psychology or sociology of sport, you may wish to consult the PsycInfo database.
