Multicultural education refers to any educational program designed to help students "clarify their own ethnic identity and appreciate that of others, reduce prejudice and stereotyping, and promote cultural pluralism" in the broader society [Source: James E. Houston (Ed.) (1995) Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors. (13th ed.) Phoenix, Ariz : Oryx Press. p. 198] . The study of multiculturalism in education can include, among other things, the examination of curriculum materials for their depiction of racial and ethnic minority groups and the study of the provision of educational services to members of ethnic and racial minority groups. More recently, the term "pluralism" has also been used in the study of education to indicate concerns that encompass not only issues of race and ethnicity, but also those of gender, age, physical/mental/emotional disability, and sexual orientation.
