Circulation Policies

UMKC School of Dentistry faculty, students and staff may check out books and journals from the Dental Library. To check out items, present UMKC photo identification card. Other UMKC faculty, staff and students may check out book material only from the Dental Library. Businesses or individuals without UMKC affiliation may purchase a membership to the Community Information Program in order to obtain checkout privileges. Open stacks are self service except for reserve materials.

Loan Periods

Books:

• Students/Staff: 2 weeks
• Faculty: Semester

Journals: 1 day
Reserve Items: Overnight or room use
Reference Books: non-circulating

Renewals
Renewal is permitted one time per item for the same length of time as the original loan. Renewals may be obtained by telephone or in person.

Holds
Holds may be placed on items checked out to others. Patrons will be notified when items are available. Items on hold may not be renewed.

Overdues
When an item becomes overdue, a reminder notice is sent requesting return. At the second notice, library privileges are suspended until material is returned.

Returns
Please return books to the Circulation Desk during library hours.

University Libraries Photocopying and Printing Services

All patrons may use the Ikon Services copy machines located in the library. Copycards cost $1.00, and copies are $.09 each in addition to the cost of the card. All photocopying in the Dental Library is subject to the provision of the U.S. Copyright Law (Title 17).

Reference

A reference librarian is normally on duty at the Reference desk from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. If Reference is not staffed, address questions to Circulation staff or email: Dental Reference.

Computer Literature Searching

The Dental Library has available patron access to a wide variety of databases in such fields as psychology, education, business and nursing as well as those offered by the National Library of Medicine. Mediated searches are available to faculty and students of the UMKC School of Dentistry at no cost. Searches for other patrons are charged for connect time and other costs.

Interlibrary Loan

The Dental Library will attempt to obtain from other libraries any materials not available at this site. This service is provided for primary clientele (UMKC students and faculty and persons affiliated with the School of Dentistry). Other patrons should check with the library at their own institution for interlibrary loans first. Public libraries will process interlibrary loans for unaffiliated persons. Response time will vary depending on the item requested.

Library Instruction Program

A variety of classes are offered on subjects such as searching MEDLINE and finding dental resources. Individual instruction can be arranged by emailing or calling Ann Marie Corry, Dental Librarian at (816) 235-2030, or stopping by the library.

Instructional Resources Library/Computer Center

The Instructional Resources Library/Computer Center is located immediately adjacent to the Library. The IRL includes video tapes, slides and patient education materials. For school presentations, contact the IRL in advance to reserve necessary materials.

The Computer Center is split between the IRL and the main Reading Room of the Dental Library. There are a total of 37 personal computer workstations and 3 laser printers. Only specific programs are available for use by authorized UMKC students, faculty and staff. Check for compatibility if you are using nonstandard programs to work on a specific project. Loaner diskettes are available; however, if you are working on a long term project, consider purchasing your own diskettes.

All computers may be used to access UMKC email accounts and the Internet. Since the Computer Center is open to students, faculty and staff, it is recommended that users exercise discretion in terms of websites accessed.

Career Opportunity Center

The School of Dentistry Library maintains a Career Opportunity Center for the benefit of students, alumni and other dental health professionals. The Center includes practice opportunities being offered by dentists in practice or by communities seeking a dentist. The Center also includes information from institutions offering general practice or AEGD residencies. Material on advanced specialty programs is also available.
